Uzumaki Naruto is the story's protagonist. He was born October 10, the day the dreaded Nine-Tailed demon fox (Kyuubi) attacked the Hidden Village of Konohagakure. Despite the valiant efforts of Konoha's shinobi the Kyuubi could not be deterred from his rampage until the Fourth Hokage (Yondaime) used a combination of the Shiki Fuujin (Dead Demon Consuming Seal) and the Hakke no Fuin Shiki (Eight Trigrams Sealing Style) to seal the Kyuubi inside the body of a newborn infant - Uzumaki Naruto.
Naruto is a mischevious and playful character by nature, much like a fox. It was the Yondaime's wish that Naruto be viewed as a hero for being the container and jailer of the Kyuubi, however, the villagers of Konoha view Naruto as the Kyuubi himself. A law was passed forbidding the talk and mentioning of the Kyuubi to those of Naruto's generation so that he might be able to grow up "normal". In the end the children picked up on their parent's fear and contempt and treated Naruto just as poorly.
Miraculously Naruto does not return that antagonism and instead dreams of the day that he may be able to become Hokage. Once he wished to acheive this lofty position only so that others would be forced to acknowledge him. Now however, Naruto aspires to this position so that he might be able to protect those he considers to be his precious people and the people of Konoha itself.
Naruto's kind, caring and cheerful disposition has served to be the catalyst for many character's outlooks on life. Most notably, Naruto has had a dramatic impact and influence on the lives of Hyuuga Hinata, Umino Iruka, Konohamaru, Uchiha Sasuke, Hyuuga Neji, Jiraiya, Tsunade, Sabaku no Gaara (and by effect his siblings), and Sai - just to name a few. It remains to be seen though whether Naruto will be able to aide his best friend Uchiha Sasuke one last time.
