Who are the Vizard

Please note: this section may contain minor spoilers for those not up to date with manga currently being published weekly in Shounen Jump in Japan. Spoilers will be kept to a minimum in this section for the benefit of those who may be following just the anime, the anime-dub (North American release), and English release of the manga from VIZ Media.

Hirako Shinji (平子 真子)

Shinji is first seen in the cover art of chapter 1 of the manga although he does not make his first appearance in the manga until chapter 184 "Hush". Shinji is the unofficial leader of the Vizard, although the group does not appear to have any sort of hiearchy and remains a loose-knit group. Shinji initially enrolls at Karakura high school in an attempt to get close to Ichigo. Due to Ichigo's poor ability to sense spiritual power, Ichigo does not sense anything unusual about Shinji, except his big grin grin and odd attitude, although Chado, Orihimi, and Ishida do give him strange looks. Later, Shinji approaches Ichigo and attacks him with his zanpakutou. When Ichigo demands to know who he is, Shinji reveals his hollow mask, which looks much like a Pharoh's mask, and tells Ichigo that he is like him, a Shinigami who has attained hollow abilities. Shinji goes on to tell Ichigo that he is on the wrong side [the Shinigami] and that he should join his kin, the Vizard.

Shinji has a carefree attitude, likes to annoy Hiyori despite the fact that this often results in bodily injury to himself, and has the over all air of a jokester. He refers to Inous Orihime as his first love, however, Lisa reveals that this is a lie and that he does this with every new cute girl he meets, including herself. During a confrontation with Chad and Orihime however, he shows that he is very level headed however and keeps Hiyori in line. Shinji, like the other Vizard, does not seem to like the Shinigami very much.

During his battle with the Espada Grimmjow, Shinji shows he has full mastery of his Hollow powers by firing a cero at Grimmjow. While in his masked form, Grimmjow is no match for him and moves to release his own zanpakutou. In the video games, Shinji is shown being able to split his cero blasts into a pyramid-shaped attack. Whether he has this ability in the manga remains to be seen. Shinji's zanpakutou remains unnamed at present, however, it has been confirmed, as of chapter 316 of the manga, that he has achieved bankai.

Sarugaki Hiyori (猿柿 ひよ里)

Hiyori is short in stature, which belies her power. She has a fierce temper and brash attitude. Her character, as noted by Kensei, is much like Ichigo's which is likely the reason that Hiyori becomes Ichigo's primary instructor during his training with the Vizard. Because Hiyori sees herself in Ichigo, this is likely why she became infuriated with Ichigo's fear of his hollow and forced him to bring it out. Like the other Vizard, Hiyori does not care for Shinigami. In fact, her dislike of Shinigami is so strong it would not be amiss to say she "hates" them. Despite her "I could care less" attitude, Hiyori feels very deeply and reveals that the life of a Vizard is very sad and lonely because they are not wanted by Shinigami but do not quite fit in with normal humans either.

Hiyori wears her blonde hair pulled into two messy pigtails with two girly hairpins keeping her bangs in check. She sports a red jogging suit and sandals. The jacket of her out has the kanji for "Hi" on it. Hiyori displays a tiny fang on the left side of her mouth. When upset, or when Shinji is being an idiot in her book, Hiyori likes to smack him with her sandal and knock him around. She also does not hesitate to use him as her living shield in fights either, as displayed during her argument with Ichigo.

Of the Vizard, Hiyori took the longest to battle her inner-hollow; her battle lasted. Her zanpakutou is fairly standard in appearance, ironically however, the guard of her sword (tsuba) is decorated with hearts. She wears her zanpakutou across her right shoulder, like Ichigo and Hitsugaya Toushirou. Hiyori's hollow mask has a large horn protruding from the forehead and has red traingular designs along the browridges.

Aigawa Love (愛川 羅武 ラヴ)

Love's introduction occurs in chapter 214 of the manga "Immanent God Blues". He is a very laid back character and difficult to get a rise out of, in fact, he has yet to ever really appear "upset" about anything. When confronted with the high-speed regeneration of Ichigo's hollow form, Love merely gives a weary smile and says "how troublesome".

Sans Hachi, Love is the tallest of the Vizard and his spiked afro adds further to his rather incredible height. Love sports a green jogging suit and wears mirrored sunglasses at all times. He enjoys reading manga and tends to read Rose's manga outloud, thus spoiling it for Rose, and admits to borrowing one of Lisa's errotic mangas every two days.

The hilt of Love's zanpakutou is heart-shaped and he carries it on a touju across his shoulders. Although his zanpakutou, to date, remains unamed, it is known that he has achieved bankai.

Yadomaru Lisa (矢胴丸 リサ)

Yadomaru Lisa is the "porn" reading member of the Vizard who supplies the other Vizard with erotic manga, she makes her initial appearance alongside the other Vizard in chapter 214 "Immanent God Blue" of the manga. She does not contribute much in way of Ichigo's training, although she does lend him some of her manga (which Ichigo denies borrowing), and she is the first to step into the barrier to fight against Ichigo's hollow-form durring his inner battle. She has a quick temper, and as seen in fight with Ichigo, Lisa is very acrobactic and ambidextrous. Lisa's fighting style makes use of her flexibility and athleticism by allowing her to execute a number of flips and even hand spins. Paired with her ability to fight either left or right-handed makes her a difficult opponent.

Lisa sports a pair of glasses and a sailor fuku uniform. She wears her long dark hair pulled back into a braid. Lisa's zanpakutou is longer than most zanpakutou in their sealed state. This has led to many calling her zanpakutou a "nodachi". A nodachi is a large two-handed Japanese field sword however, and as seen in her fight with Ichigo, Lisa never wields her sword with two hands. This feat, along with her accrobatics, would be impossible if her sword were a true nodachi. The term "nodachi" is often missaplied to any type of oversized Japanese sword.

Ootoribashi Roujuurou (鳳橋 楼十郎) aka Rose (ローズ)

Rose makes his initial appearance alongside the other vizard in chapter 214 of the manga. He seems to find Ichigo amusing, calls him Ichigo "boyo" and is both amused and impressed with Ichigo's audacity to challenge Shinji to a fight. Rose has long wavy blonde hair and dresses in a black suit and jacket with a frilly white Victorian shirt underneath giving him a very effeminate appearance. Rose has a very calm demeanor and only seems to loose his temper when Love reads his manga reveals what happens in it before Rose gets a chance to read it. Rose also has an interest in music and is a musician as well making Rose the "artist" of the group.

The hilt of Rose's zankpakutou is diamond shaped with curved edges and the sheath is encrusted with diamonds. While his zanpakutou's name is unknown it is known that he has acheived bankai.

Muguruma Kensei (六車 拳西)

Kensei also makes his initial appearance alongside the rest of the Vizard in chapter 214 of the manga. He has a very strict and serious personality, although not truly stoic, and is initially contemptuous of Ichigo's strength level during his [Ichigo's] fight with Shinji. During that fight, Kensei appears to be both dissapointed and disgusted that someone who is still so afraid of their hollow is trying to join up with them. As time goes on he appears to re-evaluate his opinion of Ichigo. Kensei, as seen in an omake in the anime, is the Vizard's cook. Kensei sports a basketball jersey and cargo pants with combat boots and has several piercings in his ears as well as a single piercing on his left eyebrow.

Kensei's zanpakutou, Tachikaze, in its sealed state, features a rectangular-shaped hilt. Tachikaze is released with the command "futtobase" (blow it away). In its shikai (initial release) form, Tachikaze takes the form of a black combat knife. During his fight with Ichigo it is seen that Kensei can charge Tachikaze with spirit energy and fire it at his opponent. This is similar in form, if not size, to Ichigo's own zanpakutou Zangetsu.

Kuna Mashiro (久南 白)

Like the majority of the Vizard, Mashiro's initial appearace occurs in chapter 214 of the manga. Mashiro comes off as a ditzy and happy go-lucky character. She sports a white tokosatsu bodysuit with orange boots, gloves, and an orange handkerchief tied around her neck. Her green hair is worn in a sleek bob and adorned with a pair of white goggles. It is revealed that, unlike the other Vizard, Mashiro was able to main her mask for fifteen hours straight on her very first attempt to don her mask after defeating her hollow. This meant that, unlike the others, she did not have to go through endurance training to build up the amount of time that she could maintain her mask in battle.

Mashiro seems to take a quick liking to everyone, sans Inoue Orihime, and likes to tease and make nicknames for people. She calls Hiyori "Hiyorin" and Ichigo "Berry-tan", a play on his name (Ichigo meaning strawberry in Japanese) and appears to be very close with Hachi. When Orihime leaves after her initial visit to the underground hideout of the Vizard, Mashiro expresses her dislike of Orihime.

Ushouda Hachigen (有昭田 鉢玄)

Ushouda Hachigen, who goes mostly by the nickname of Hachi (ハッチ) is the "gentle giant" of the Vizard. Hachi specializes in barriers and binding kidoh, as such, Hachi is the one responsible for the barriers surrounding the Vizard's hideout that keeps their location unknown to the shinigami. He is also the one responsible for constructing the barrier that Ichigo and the Vizard fought in during Ichigo's battle against his Hollow, and the initial binding spells that contained him [Ichigo].

During Ichigo's training with the Vizard, Inoue Orihime is able to track them down, despite Hachi's barriers. Orihime then slips through, but does not break, Hachi's barriers which causes mild alarm amongst the Vizard who have never meet anyone who could such an act. After meeting with Orihime briefly, Hachi discerns that the reason she was able to do this is because her abilities (Santen Kisshoun) are similar to his. Later, Hachi asks Hiyori to bring Orihime back to the hideout (which she does none too gently). After briefly studying Orihime's Santen Kisshoun, Hachi remarks that it acts similar to a Shinigami's zanpakuzanpakutoutou and heals Tsubaki for her.

Hachi is a soft spoken character, a major contrast to the rest of the Vizard who are, for the most part, loud and boisterous. He has a very proper speach, and tends to add "desu" to the end of each sentence. Hachi wears a green tuxedo and sports black crossbones in in his pink hair. Due to an off-hand comment from Shinji, page 4 of chapter 218, it is implied that Hachi is older than the other Vizard. No official age has been given for Hachi as of yet however, so it is only known that he is at least a hundred years old like the rest.
