Before They Were Vizard

Please note: this section contains major spoilers for those not up to date with the manga currently being published weekly in Shounen Jump in Japan. Hirako Shinji (平子 真子)

At this time, Hirako Shinji is the Captain of the 5th Division and his Vice-Captain is none other than Aizen Sousuke. Shinji's skills and abilities are certainly impressive at this time. Thus far, Shinji remains the only person capable of not only senseing the illusions created by Aizen's zanpaktou, but he can see through them and shatter them with a casual gesture. An exchange that takes place between Aizen and Shinji in chapter 317 suggests that Shinji may already be aware that Aizen Sousuke is not the kind and gentle person everyone thinks he is and that Shinji is aware that Aizen is up to something. His [then] relationship with Hiyori remains much the same as it is now, despite their rank differences. The discussion between Love, Shinji, and later Shunsui and Jyuushiro, implies that Love and Shinji have been Captains for some time now, but were not captains the century previous. As the Pendulum arc is set 100 years before the current timeline, one can assume that, at that point, Shinji and Love have already been captains anywhere from a handful of years to a couple of decades, but not a full century.

Shinji appears to have a love for Jazz music during this time, and despite his station, has the laid back and jokster-like attitude that we see in him during the current timeline. He wears a fairly standard Shinigami uniform, his Captain's haori has full sleeves similar to Jyuushiro's.

Because Shinji is a Captain, and the only captain to acheive that rank without a bankai is Kenpachi, it is more than safe to assume that Shinji has achieved bankai. At this point in time however, his zanpaktou and its releases remain unnamed.

Sarugaki Hiyori (猿柿 ひよ里)

During this time, Hiyori is the Vice-Captain of the 12th Division, which is in charge of research and development. Urahara Kisuke is her new Captain, whom she takes an immediate dislike to. Initially Hiyori's dislike of the new captain is a result of his seemingly lack of confidence at the ceremony and the fact that she views him as a poor "replacement" for Kirio Hikifune, the previous Captain of the 12th. Shinji reveals in chapter 317, that Hiyori saw Hikifune as a sort of mother-figure and is feeling abandoned and a bit betrayed since Hikifune accepted the promotion to the Royal Guard and left ASAP. Her dislike of Kisuke grows when it is revealed that he was the former 3rd seat of the 2nd Division. The fact that his [then Captain] Yoruichi was the one to nominate him is also disquieting to her. Hiyori does not like the Secret Mobile Corps, and likens them to sneaking-murderers. She immediately questions why a 2nd Division member has been made captain of the 12th and does not feel comfortable with it.

During this time, Urahara begins creating the Research Institution and changes the 12th Division into what it is during the current timeline. He makes some initial changes to the rooms of the 12th Division, starting with the Captain's rooms, which upset Hiyori as she sees these changes as an intrusion on the memories of Hikifune. Kurotsuchi Mayuri is made Vice-President of the institute and is second in command only to Captain Urahara. The release of Mayuri from his confinement and his position in the 12th does not sit well with Hiyori in the least and she begins to really question her captian's sanity.

Hiyori's relationship with Shinji remains much the same then as it does now. Despite rank difference, Hiyori is not hesitant to give him a kick to the face by way of greeting. Since Hiyori primarily wanders around barefoot, Shinji does not get smack with a sandal at this time. hiyori sports the standard shinigami uniform and Vice-Captain's badge, the only noticeable difference, aside from clothes, in her appearence is the absence of her hair pins and the fact that her hair, while worn in the same style, is significantly longer.

Aigawa Love (愛川 羅武 ラヴ)

During this time, Aigawa Love is the Captain of the 7th Division. He, like Shinji, has been a Captain for some time prior to the beginning of the Pendulum arc. His Vice-Captain remains unknown, as he or she has not been named or seen yet. When love makes his first appearance, he is seen playing mediator between Shinji and Hiyori who are acting like children, despite their rank. Love smacks Hiyori to keep her from attacking Shinji again, and then attempts to keep them apart when Shinji baits her. Thus far, Love appears to play the role of mediator and voice of wisdom amongst the heads of the Gotei 13.

Love's appearance has undergone a small amount of change. He still wears his hair in an afro, although not spiked, and sports a pair of dark-lensed sunglasses in place of his mirror-like ones during the current time. He wears a standard shingami uniform with a sleeveless Captain's haori. It is clear that he has achieved bankai, although his zanpaktou and its releases remain unnamed.

Yadomaru Lisa (矢胴丸 リサ)

During this time, Yadomaru Lisa is the Vice-Captain of the 8th Division, her Captain is Kyoraku Shunsui. Lisa sports a radical variation of the shinigami uniform. She has replaced the bottom part of her uniform with a black pleated skirt that looks very much like her modern-day sailor fuku uniform. Her trademark glasses are still in attendance, however, her hairstyle does differ. In this time, Lisa wears her hair braided and pulled back in two pigtails, and her bangs are parted to one side. At first glance, Lisa could pass for Ise Nanao's sister, and much like her successor, Lisa has the difficult task of keeping her captain in check and forcing him to get his work done.

While it is more than safe to assume that Lisa knows the initial release of her zanpaktou, her sword has remained unamed at this point and no clue has been given as to whether or not she has achieved bankai.

Ootoribashi Roujuurou (鳳橋 楼十郎)

Status: Shinigami
Rank: Captain (Taichou)
Division: 3rd
Zanpaktou: Unknown
Pendulum Arc Introduction: c-108; pg13

Rose, a century before the current timeline, is the Captain of the 3rd Division, his Vice-Captain is not yet mentioned or shown. It is, however, mentioned that Rose has only been the Captain of the 3rd Division for a year while they are gathering for Urahara Kisuke's Captaincy ceremony. At this time, Rose sports the standard shinigami uniform, with his trademark ruffles peeking out from his top, and a sleeveless Captain's haori. His long wavy blonde hair is worn hanging down over his back and tied at the bottom with a ribbon.

As Captain of the 3rd division, it is safe to say that Rose has achieved bankai. However, his zanpaktou and its releases remain unnamed.

Muguruma Kensei (六車 拳西)

While it was not implicitly stated which division Kensei is the Captain of, initially, it was easy to infer that he was the Captain of the 9th. On page ten of chapter -108, Love and Shinji are discussing which captains have and haven't arrived for the captain ceremony. It is noted that Zaraki Kenpachi, Captain of the 11th, is not present and not likely to show. On page six of chapter -107 the Captains are in their usual formation before Yamamoto Soutaichou, which is to say that they are standing at attention in two lines. Captains of odd division numbers on one side, and captains of even number divisions on the other side. Kensei is standing in-between Aigawa Love, Captain of the 7th Division, and Ukitake Jyuushiro, Captain of the 13th Division - 7 and 13. Since it is known that Zaraki (11th) is not present, by process of elimination we can deduce that Kensei is the 9th Division Captain. This is later confirmed on page nine (ironically) of chapter -104.

Kensei's personality remains much unchanged, and unfortunately for him, his Vice-Captain, Kuna Mashiro, is already very good at annoying him. At this time, Kensei does not appear to have any of the piercings that later adorn him in the current timeline and he wears his hair longer in front. Kensei wears a sleeveless shihakusho and sleeveless captain's haori paired with a pair of fighting gloves. Members of of Kensei's division wear white long white coats similar to modern day gang jackets.

During a patrol, Kensei and some members of his division come upon a hollow attacking spirits, amongst them is a little boy. After defeating the hollow, Kensei tries to cheer the boy up in his own gruff manor. Kensei asks the boy what his name is and the little boy states his name is "Hisagi Shuuhei" to which Kensei replies with "Shuuhei eh? That's a good strong name. Now quit crying!" It's fairly safe to say that Kensei's act and manor played a major role in shaping Shuuhei into the shinigami that he is today.

Kensei's zanpakutou, Tachikaze, is revealed in chapter -104 of the Pendulum Arc, and the release command for Tachikaze is "futtobase" (吹っ飛ばせ) which has been translated as "blow it away" and just "blow".

Kuna Mashiro (久南 白)

Mashiro makes her first appearance in chapter -104 of the Pendulum Arc, and as befits her, she is immediately annoying Kensei! It would seem that Kensei and Mashiro are the Hitsugaya Toushirou and Matsumoto Rangiku of this time period. Indeed, it would seem that any female Vice-Captain who wears a scarf is bad news for a white haired Captain. Ironies abound.

Her appearance back then and the one we are familiar with are fairly different. Gone is the white tokusatsu bodysuit and in its place is a fairly standard, albeit a size or two too large, shinigami uniform with a pink scarf tied around her neck. Her shihakushou's sleeves dangle over her hands and seems a little long in the legs as well. This paired with her somewhat childish behavior gives her the appearance of a child. Her green hair is still worn short, however it's appearance is wavy instead of the sleek bob she sports in current times. Her white googles are replaced with a pair of dark lensed white sunglasses.

Ushouda Hachigen (有昭田 鉢玄)

Hachigen "Hachi", makes his first appearance in the seventh part of the Pendulum Arc, chapter -102. It is revealed that he is the Vice-Captain of the Kido Corps under Captain Tsukabishi Tessai. Given his extensive knowledge of barriers in the current timeline, this really isn't that surprising. Hachi, along with Lisa, Shinji, Love, and Rose are assigned to head to the scene where Kensei and Mashiro were attacked to investigate.

As seen in the image to your right, Hachi's appearance has undergone some minor changes since then and now. While Hachi has his pink hair, he does not appear to be sporting the crossbones on his head anymore and instead sports another symbol, which cannot be clearly seen. Also, the style of his cut is changed as well and Hachi sports little black-tipped horns in his hair.

Hachi's zanpaktou remains unnamed, as such, it also remains unknown whether he has achieved bankai. Although it does seem unlikely.
