Utakata was the jinchuuriki of the Rokubi no Namekuji and a former shinobi of Kirigakure no Sato with a 50 million ryou bounty on his head. He defected from Kiri at an unknown point in time and became a wanderer. Utakata's name, ironically, means "transient" or "ephemeral"; meaning to exist briefly.

Utakata had a very laid-back personality, and according to Kishimoto, could also be very charming. Utakata is usually depicted with a calm and stoic visage, although it has been seen that he possessed a playful and mischievious side as well. He enjoyed lounging about in the grass or skies and napping. Utakata was also a master of a special branch of ninjutsu known as Soap Bubble Ninjutsu. He was captured by the Akatsuki; prior to their focused hunting of Naruto and Killer Bee. Utakata's demon was successfully extracted by the Akatsuki which resulted in his death.

Utakata was first introduced in chapter 420 of the manga, where he appeared along side the other jinchuuriki for a special splash page celebrating the 9th aniversary of the Naruto series. Utakata is shown calmly blowing bubbles, his bubble blower held in a two-handed grip, with six fingers held up in the air (see picture above) to demonstrate the number of tails his bijuu possesses. At the time of his first appearance, it had already been revealed that all of the jinchuuriki, sans Killer-Bee (Hachibi) and Uzumaki Naruto (Kyuubi), had been captured and their demons extracted.

On January 21, 2010, at the beginning of season 7, a small eight-episode anime-only arc aired on TV Tokyo that featured Utakata. The arc provided a backstory for Utakata and expounded on the skills listed for the character in the latest [at the time] data book while foreshadowing events to come. It is important to remember that the background given to Utakata is an anime-only arc and may not be considered "canon" to some. It remains to be seen if any of the information given in the anime will make it into future databooks.
