Trivia

Sometimes we readers get so caught up in the action that we miss the minor details. Below is a compilation of random facts about the Mizukage that you may (or may not) have noticed.
  • At the time of her introduction Terumi Mei is the only female Kage in power.
  • Mei is the second known female to have obtained the Kage rank.
  • The only known female Kage, Mei and Tsunade, both hold the "Godaime" (5th) title.
  • Konan, Tsunade, and Mei are the only canon (not including filler or movie characters) kunoichi seen wearing nail polish, although the color that Mei wears is yet unknown.
  • Mei and Mitarashi Anko are the only shinobi seen to sport shinguards strapped to their sandals that is not part of a uniform; i.e: ANBU.
  • Despite their provacative and daring outfits; Mei, Samui (Kumo), Anko (Konoha), Kurotsuchi (Iwa), and Kurenai (Konoha) sport the more traditional flat-footed shinobi sandals with little to no heel instead of the high-heeled kunoichi sandals seen worn by a few other kunoichi (ie: Shizune, Tsunade, Ten-Ten, Hinata, Konan...).
  • Mei possesses two bloodlines a feat that, until her introduction, was thought to be impossible.
  • As a bloodline holder, Mei's appointment to Mizukage marks a significant change in opinions and beliefs in Kirigakure given their history of killing bloodline holders.
  • The name of Mei's technique, Youton: Youkai no Jutsu, is a humorous play on words. The technique is called "Youkai" which is spelled with the kanji and means "Melting Apparition". It is comprised of the kanji for the word "Youkai" (which when written in this manner means demon or apparition) and the kanji for "Youkai" (which when written in this manner means "dissolution").
  • In chapter 457 of the manga, a special two-page colored insert was included and featured the five Kages and Naruto. In this colored insert Mei's eyes are a light green and she is not wearing any lipstick. However, in every appearance she makes in the manga, her lips are colored in signifying that she is indeed wearing lipstick.
  • The kanji for Mei's family name, Terumii , means "shinning/illuminated beauty". However, the furigana that appeared next to her name in the manga was written in katakana and shows the pronounciation of her name with a shortened "i" sound instead of the standard lenghtened "ii" sound. In other words, Terumi instead of Terumii. This suggests that Kishimoto might intend for her name to have a different meaning.
  • On the cover of the 49th volume of the manga the five kage and Naruto are depicted, in a style different from the colored two-page insert, and Mei is shown with bright lime-green eyes and she is wearing a dark-blue shade of lipstick.
