 Northern War

Be advised, if you have not read up to volume 12 in the manga or seen the anime series in its entirety you will run across some spoilers.

After the encounter with Riful of the West, Jean pledges her life to Clare and swears that her life belongs to Clare, to do with as she see fits. As far as Jean is concerned, she would have died in that dungeon or become a monster had it not been for Clare and she is determined to pay that favor back. Her honor demands it. Clare and Jean are eventually tracked down by Rafela and assigned to the Northern country of Alphonse where a large group of Claymore are gathering to fight the army of another Dweller of the Deep, Isley of the North. When they first arrive in Pieta, Helen, by way of greeting, attacks Clare. Jean, not knowing that Helen is a friend, steps in to defend Clare and is parlayed by Deneve who tells Jean that it was merely a greeting and not to stick her nose in.

A minor scuffle between Deneve, Helen and Jean ensues and Helen is dumbfounded why someone is following Clare, the lowest ranked warrior. When Deneve and Helen ask for Jean's name and rank they are floored to hear she is #9. When asked why she's following Clare, Jean simply tells them that she owes Clare her life - rank has nothing to do with that. Deneve is immediately surprised and pleased to see that not all single-digit warriors are as arrogant as she believed.

During the Northern Campaign, Miria breaks the warriors into five groups lead by the highest ranked warriors: #6 Miria, #8 Flora, #9 Jean, #11 Undine, and #13 Veronia. Jean's team consists of:

  • #17 Eliza
  • #27 Emelia
  • #37 Natalie
  • #44 Diane

Sadly, none of Jean's team survive the final battle in Pieta.

Turn back...since it's you, you should be able to. Turn back. There. Now I've returned the words from that time...and what I owed you.

During the battle in Pieta, the Claymores, using Miria's strategy, are able to hold out against the Awakened Ones. Despite losing five Claymores in the initial attack, the Claymores are able to quickly regroup and strike back, allowing them to take down three in rapid succession. Just when it seems that the Claymores have effectively turned the tide of the battle and may just win this, Rigardo steps in.

Because Isley's plan calls for an immense amount of Awakened Beings, Rigardo deduces that they cannot afford to suffer any more losses and calls back the troops so that he may step into the fray. Rigardo, a powerful Awakened One in his own right, notices that the five teams are lead by five strong warriors. Fully realizing that elimination of the captains of these teams will cause the other Claymores to fall into dissaray, Rigardo begins to target each captain and makes quick work of Veronica and Undine before moving on to Jean. When Rigardo targets Jean, Clare moves to assist her, but Jean orders Clare to stay and protect the captain of her team, Flora.

Jean is barely able to defend against Rigardo's powerful and quick attacks herslef. Taking advantage of a momentary distraction from a commrade, Jean draws on her Yoma energy and powers up her Drill Sword. In perhaps the fastest time ever, Jean winds up her sword to it's maximum rotations, twenty-one, and launches a fierce and powerful attack. Unfortunately, Rigardo's speed is far greater and he dodges to the side allowing the powerfully attack to sail by uselessly while leaving Jean wide open and vulnerable. In this moment of vulnerability, Rigardo drives his fist into her midsection and out her back, fatally wounding Jean.

A furious Clare launches an attack at Rigardo but is batted away with ease, resulting in Flora being the next captain to be taken down. Only Miria is left standing now. Clare, Helen, and Deneve do their best to protect Miria but are no match for Rigardo. Soon Miria and Rigardo are duking it out and it is all that Miria can do to keep up with him. Just when it seems like Miria too will fall, Clare reaches deep within her and calls for more, more power, the power that was necessary to save Jean and to protect Flora.

In order to save Miria, Clare awakens just her legs which greatly augments her speed. However, even though she managed to severe one of Rigardo's limbs, it becomes apparent that she cannot fully control her legs and is at a disadvantage. As the fight drags on Clare is left with only one other option, to unleash all of her youma energy and awaken all four of her limbs. In doing so she increases her speed and power, not to mention she eventually gains control of all four limbs as well. However, after defeating Rigardo, Clare is unable to return to her human form. Clare has passed her limits and can no longer control her limbs, despite retaining her human mind and heart.

Because she has no control of her limbs, she asks Helen, who can strike from a safe distance, to finish her while she still has a human heart. As Helen prepares to carry out her wish she is stopped by Jean. The wound Rigardo inflicted on her will eventually kill her, and so with her last strength and energy she embraces Clare and syncs her yoki with Clare's to pull her back. With her last strength and breath, Jean returns the favor - her life for Clare's.
