 Who Is Jean?

So just who is this strong, loyal, and noble warrior for whom I have built this fanlisting? Read on to learn a bit about her character and her introduction into the series!

 . The Basics

Name: Jean
Rank: #9
Battle Type:: Offensive
Affiliation: Organization/Clare
Nature: Claymore/Partially Awakened
Abilities: Drill Sword
Status: Deceased
Seiyuu: Mitsuishi Kotono
Symbol:

Jean is a single-digit warrior, and offensive fighter, within The Organization who holds the rank of #9. She is an Offensive type fighter whose unique sword technique has the most destructive power of all the current Claymores. Her sword technique is called Drill Sword, which she achieves by gathering her yoki to her right arm and winding it up. Once released, the sword has enough power to pierce even the toughest armor. While she can use the technique with a bare minimum of rotations, as seen in her brief scuffle with Deneve, it is far more effective when she winds her arm up to maximum amount of rotations that she can achieve, twenty-one. The obvious drawback of the technique, however, is that it takes time for her to wind her arm up.

Jean is a very dedicated warrior who believes fully in her ideals. She also has a deep sense of honor and is extremely loyal to those she gives her trust and friendship too. Jean makes her first appearance in volume 8 of the manga and episode 15, "The Witch's Maw Part 1" of the anime series.

 . Introduction

I owe Clare my life. What does that have to do with rank?

When Jean is first introduced, she is leading a four-woman team consisting of Katea, Rakel, and another unamed Claymore to fight an Awakened One who is supposed to be holed up in the nearby mountains. As they're passing through the town Jean briefly senses Clare in a local inn, who is there searching for Raki. Because of the suppresants that Clare is taking, Jean is unable to pinpoint her yoki and shrugs it off. Contrary to the information they had received however, this is no ordinary Awakened One they are fighting. Instead of a single Awakened Being, Jean and her team walk into a trap laid by Riful of West, a former #1 of the organization prior to awakening. Riful, her second-in-command Dauf, and their minions easily overpower the unprepared team and begin to torture them in an attempt to force them to awaken and join Riful.

Riful allows one Claymore to escape in hopes that more powerful warriors will come and provide her with even better allies. It is because of this, that Clare learns of the ambush and heads out to save her commrades. Meanwhile, one of Jean's teammates, Katea, awakens after extreme torture, but is immediately killed by Dauf when she is judged to be too weak. Riful continues to torture and taunt Jean as she really wants a single-digit warrior to awaken. Riful tells Jean that she is a monster in the eyes of the humans she's trying to protect and that her fight is meaningless. Jean doesn't even hesitate to admit that, yes she might be a monster, as Riful says. But she was born a human, has a human heart, and wishes to die as a human.

After a time, Jean's body awakens but her mind remains human and she continues to fight becoming fully awakened. Clare, seeing Jean's continued to struggle, even though her body is fully awakened, synchronizes her yoki with Jean to pull her back from the edge. Jean's awakened form resembles a beautiful butterfly.
