Not much is yet known about Sai yet except for the juicy little tidbits that he has willingly (and in some cases) unwillingly divulged. What is known is this: Sai is a shinobi of exceptional talent who specializes in ink based attacks. Using his artistic abilities, Sai is able to draw animals (Choujou Giga) and clones of himself (Sumi Bunshin), and then manipulate them. The animals can act according to their nature or according to his will.
Sai is an ANBU and a member of the Roots sub-division created by Danzou. The Roots sub-division was supposed to have been disbanded upon the Third Hokage's ascension, as Danzou opposed the Third's methods, but Danzou continued to operate this sub-division and still retains loyal members.
At this point in time Sai's real name is still unknown. While Hatake Kakashi was injured Sai was selected to fill Uchiha Sasuke's vacant spot on Team 7 when Naruto, Sakura and Yamato (Tenzou) went to retrieve Sasuke. "Sai" is actually the codename that was assignened to him while he was on the mission. Sai's real mission, however, was not to rescue Sasuke, but to assassinate him, as Danzou believed the Uchiha posed too great a threat to Konoha.
As a member of Roots, Sai is supposed to have no feelings, no name, no history and no past. However traces of Sai's real personality surface as Sakura stumbles upon the picture book that he has yet to complete that features his "older brother" (not blood related) who has since passed away, and in his continued desire to understand Naruto and the bonds he shares with Sasuke.
