Bubblegum Crisis (バブルガムクライシス) is a classic Cyber-Punk anime OVA, with a manga adaptation, that first aired in 1987 and was directed by Akiyama Katsuhito. BGC was initially intended to be run for a full 13 episodes, however, licensing issue arose between the two companies, Artmic and Youmex, that held dual rights over the series which resulted in the OVA being cut down from the planned thirteen episode to just eight.

While the OVA received a lukewarm reception in Japan, it was widely recieved in North America. As a result of it's North American popularity, BGC was one of the first anime series that was brought over in the early 90's completely unedited and fully subtitled in Enligh.

In 1991, after Artmic and Youmex's split, Youmex made their own sequel entitled Bubblegum Crash! which ran for three OVA episodes. It was rumored that Crash! was actually a shortened version of how BGC was intended to end. Legal issues once again arose between Artmic and Youmex which cut Crash! short and subsequently tied it up in the courts for years to come.

Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 first premiered on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 8, 1998 and is a retelling of the 1987 OVA. The series ran for twenty-six episodes and was produced by Anime Internationaal Company (AIC) and was funded by ADV Films.
