Despite his height, or lack there of, Toguro Ani is the eldest of the Toguro Brothers. For the majority of the time he can be seen riding on his younger brother's shoulders. In his youth both he and his younger brother and Genkai entered into the Dark Tournament. At the tournament's end each member of the winning team is granted a single wish. Both Toguro brothers sought immortality and power and thus wished to made into demons of the highest class. Toguro Ani, along with the Tournament's committee do not know exactly what kind of demon he became because apparently no others like him still exist.

Unlike his younger brother Toguro Ani has no emotional hang ups and follows no warrior's code. He enjoys torture, pain and torment, and deals them out in equal and plentiful helpings. Toguro Ani is also one tenacious SOB - he takes a licking and keeps on kicking!

We first caught a glimpse of Toguro Ani when his brother and he were employed by Tarukane to torture and torment Yukina, a koorime, into crying and dispensing her priceless hiroseki (tear gems). Toguro Ani and his younger brother Toguro Ototo fight Yusuke and Kuwabara at Tarukane's behest and as part of a beting pool that Tarukane has going with his Black Black Club.

Toguro Ani makes another appearance in the Dark Tournament as a member of Team Toguro, along with his younger brother, Bui, and Karasu. Team Toguro is a tough and [seemingly] unbeatable team. In the tournament's final round Toguro Ani faces off against Kuwabara, and it seems that Kuwabara is destined to die. In the end Toguro Ani loses and Team Urameshi takes a win. When Yusuke and Toguro Ototo face off Toguro Ani makes a return and asks to help his brother defeat Yusuke. Toguro Ototo however wasn't so game as to let his brother interfere and beat him something aweful before expelling him from the stadium.

Toguro Ani makes one final appearance in the Black Chapter Saga where he partners up with Sensui. Badly injured from Toguro Ototo's attack Sensui answers Toguro Ani's call for help at the tournament's end and Toguro Ani joins in on Sensui's schemes. Toguro Ani was having such a difficult time regenerating though, so Sensui and Toguro Ani trick one of Sensui's minions (Gourmet) into "eating" him. Gourmet, thinking that he'll be able to gobble Toguro Ani up with no difficulties eagerly does so, but to his surprise Toguro Ani takes over his body. Because of Toguro Ani's regenerative abilities he is as close as they come to immortal. When he faces off against Kurama he is ensnared by Kurama's Death Tree and continues to live but is utterly trapped in the illusions of the tree's grip - unable to break free.
